The Archetypes of Man: Hunters, Herders, Farmers

In understanding the cultural and spiritual foundation of authentic Rune Magick, and indeed of Runic and Heathen paths at all, the foundational subject that takes paramount primacy is that of cultural archetype. The axiom that the deeper Odinic Immanence (see earlier post) supersedes specific traditions limited to a specific time and place, is of course the content of that foundation – but for comprehension by the human mind, it is the cultural archetype of Indo-European folkways that gives it form, flavor, and fire.

Before there were complex modern civilizations that permit a multitude of merging and forking survival strategies within a single economic and legal society, humans lived for perhaps hundreds of millennia in small groups in the wild, where natural selection eliminated many people mainly according to their failure to obtain food and their failure to defend themselves against attackers – human or animal. Consequently, the prehistoric populations of the Ice Age and Stone Age, and their inherited cultural cognizancies and archetypes – whose influences continue to be detectable even in the present day – were created according to the distinct lifestyles of those distant times, over hundreds if not thousands of generations with very little change in living conditions. As archetypes, they are of course never universally applicable to all individuals, but are generally applicable across cultures and populations, with substantially more in-trenders than outliers (though, it must be emphasized, one's color, nationality, or even overall appearance does not necessarily reveal anything about their archetype; archetype more than anything is manifested in instinctive behaviors). If it bothers you that there is at least a possibility that predispositions to certain spiritual paths and values over others can be affected by genetic heritage and biology, please evacuate the premises and refrain from reproducing. The unworthy will always exclude themselves.

In that sense, it's time to draw a genuine cultural line in the ice. Those who don't like it, should have read the disclaimer. Getting “triggered” at reality is generally a spineless ergi nithling and will be treated as such per the stated rules of that post. This blog promotes Indo-European culture. While there is no political agenda here, there are definite cultural priorities. Authentic Rune magick has NEVER pretended to be "all things to all people". We should be very clear on what Runic culture is, and what it is not. Our creative Lore is tree-based, not desert-based or clay-based. Our Runic ethics are based on augmentation of the soil, not depletion of it. Our focus is Solar, not Lunar. Our gods are noble guides, not coercive slave drivers. Runes are great cosmic forces, not chained gremlins you can “summon” and “banish”. That isn't a value judgment on other archetypes, it's simply the reality of diversity. It's also not negotiable.

Therefore any effective and noble use of Runic Magick must take into account the essentially Solar and Agricultural nature of the founding archetype of Germanic and ultimately all Indo-European cultures. True Runic paths are very different in worldview, ethics, and procedures to herder-archetype religions like Paulian Christianity, or hunter-archetype religions like Voudou or Wakan Tanka. The archetype is vitally important to understanding a spiritual path, for the way its lifestyle valued nature for many generations has had a culturally and genetically selected effect on how the people it produced view man and the cosmos. Of course, no individual is ever enslaved to an archetype; the human being is, rather, a temple which an archetype inhabits, by the might of generations of accumulated Wyrd and interior habit; in rare cases, those with incredible will can change the actual gods, energies, and processes, welcomed and honored in that temple - in other words, the archetype.

The oldest human lifestyles are hunting and gathering, a direct continuation from the lifestyles of more primitive hominids (which we are increasingly finding out, had an ancient presence on all eastern hemisphere landmasses). However, whereas human gathering techniques were limited in the way to creative options, they by default could not become much different from those of the apes. But human hunting techniques, due to the invention of ranged hunting weapons and sharpened tools for hitting a moving target, became far more advanced than those of the apes. This development of ranged weapons was both the simplest and also the first great advance in uniquely human survival techniques, and so had both a more global application and spread in all races and tribes, and also a longer reign of primacy in the “cutting edge” position of human developments, than any of the subsequent ones.

Thus the hunter archetype dominated through the Ice Age, the entire Paleolithic era that followed, and beyond – especially in the colder climates outside of Africa, where gathering alone was inadequate to supply enough food for the winter. Typical paleolithic populations evolved under selective pressure from this hunter archetype, both in their physical traits and in their predisposition to certain types of magick and spiritual experience. This existence of heritable “blood memory” is something that classical anthropologists long suspected, though molecular biologists are now confirming through epigenetics that cultural experience across generations can strongly mold and shape the 'epigenes' or attendant proteins that govern how the more fixed and less malleable code known as DNA is expressed. Acclimate a culture to the same exact lifestyle for many generations, and not only sexual selection but also the very conditions of the lifestyle itself can start to have an effect on gene expression, and thus on health conditions, psychology, instincts, habits, and values.

Eventually the Hunter archetype, which was found in literally every race and region on the planet, formed thousands of localized cultures of its own, with little in common genetically, but sharing the common cultural thread where hunting was idealized as a lifestyle and a measure of prosperity and manhood; in time the Lore and beliefs of many peoples towards the earth and towards mankind, became informed by the hunter archetype, by their attitude towards animals and survival. They became 'earnest tribalists' who prefer overt hostility and violence to subdue or even destroy their victims and rivals. The pressures of this lifestyle generally selected for R-strategic, robust, brachycephalic morphs, fast growth, and physical senses over higher cognition and ethics. Both IQ and EQ among such populations were thus likely low to mediocre at best, though with a significant amount of regional variability given this first step up in human consciousness – from gathering to organized hunting – was essentially global and may have happened convergently in different continents instead of spreading from a single source. The dominant types of magick which emerged among hunter archetype cultures were mostly animistic in nature, involving totems, artificial (drug-induced) shamanism, and heavy use of blood sacrifice – and a general view of gods and ancestors as an implacable spiritual vending machine. This is still true of many isolated cultures today which have yet to advance beyond a stone-age hunter lifestyle. Hunter archetype cultures were generally semi-nomadic, accepting of some form of slavery, and highly prone to infighting/self-sabotage.

This is the most primitive and most common cultural archetype among humans, and is found in all continents and all modern races, in both developed and non-developed nations. In a European context it is the Cro-Magnon legacy, though one can find it just as easily in other prehistoric populations like the Zarzians of Iran, the Fuxishi of China, and the Jomon in Japan, pre-Colombian cultures all over the Americas, as well as the multitude of still-extant hunter-gatherer peoples of tropical latitudes where metallurgy never evolved indigenously. Hunter archetype cultures typically venerated stars as ancestors, and meteors/comets as omens; but there was hardly any mention of the Sun in their spiritual worldviews before their contact with Indo-European peoples, as if they almost took it for granted. Fire was used in rituals but the symbolic connection of fire with the Sun was not made.

Later, during the Mesolithic era, some populations developed a lifestyle which was much more energy-efficient than hunting – the lifestyle of herding, which was only made possible by the domestication of herbivorous animals (and in come cases, carnivorous ones as agents to keep the herbivores moving). The resulting changes in selective pressures that came from the transition from hunting to herding, created over many centuries a herder archetype, which again manifested both biologically and spiritually.

The herder lifestyle selective pressures developed an essentially herder-archetype blood memory and the resultant cultures. Such cultures could bluntly be referred to as man-herders, or 'mendacious tribalists' that prefer deception as a long-term strategy (including the feigning of universal beneficent interests) - rather than protracted overt violence - to subdue and divide competitors; unlike the hunter archetype, the cultures of these populations generally were small and nomadic, and saw it in their best interest to subdue and herd, rather than destroy, most other tribes, using the labor of others to do their bidding. As herding animals over millennia resulted in cultures that shunned and reaved away most individuals that were not predisposed to the manipulation of animals, humans, or numbers, these populations typically selected for medium to high IQ at the cost of low of EQ and produced a disproportionately influential minority of historical and modern humans; among these cultures one finds Turanids, Turks, Samoyeds, Mongols, Jews, Qahtani Arabs, Brahmins, and several now-extinct or absorbed groups such as the Pelasgians in Greece, the Enkians of Mesopotamia, and the Emishi of Iron-age Japan. These groups were historically nomadic, have slavery sanctified into their religious doctrines and laws, and are by means of tribal end-interest, are prone to “other-sabotage”.

Most of these societies (apart from using remarkably similar *kh-g-n* titles for tribal leaders and priests) also inherited forms of magick that are almost entirely herder-based and materialistic in praxis, though typically coercive rather than passively animistic or shamanic – typically involving the summoning of “angels” or “demons” and the coercion of them to do one's bidding, through sigils and spiritual slave pens/torture tools (Kabbalistic talismans, magick circles, Tugh, etc.) Though their scriptures typically have much fixation on “light”, in practice they venerated the moon rather than the Sun (thus only partially reflected light rather than pure source-light) and most of their religious ideologies also reflected the lunar-centric tendency of turning people into passive orbiters or herds, rather than active refiners of the elements of the soul.

Likewise, herder cultures generally had little use for the concept of spiritual nobility or non-nepotistic compassion, and tended to persecute it, given it did not profit the herder tribal-end lifestyle. Instead, a high emphasis was put on orthodoxy and belief without qualification, the pretext being that any dissent from such orthodoxy would bring collective punishment and woe by an implacably angry deity. Offerings were blood sacrifices, but this time, of fattened domestic herd animals, and were usually burnt (wasted) after slaughter rather than consumed by the community. Subdued nations were similarly commoditized, with large numbers of them deemed “unclean” or expendable by the herder elite like beasts, so long as this did not go as far as extinction of the host nation. As a result, only a small fraction of the population can be full members of herder-archeype cultures at any given time.

Some have argued that Samoyedic and Finno-Ugric peoples also fit this archetype, due to their near-Turanid cultural and ethnic origins - however, at least on the Finno-Ugric end of the scale, there has been considerable mixing with Indo-European peoples as well as Paleolithic hunters; and even ignoring that, there is the fact that due to climatic isolation away from large cosmopolitan population centers, the form of herder culture found among Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic tribes is still in a basal animal-centric stage not far removed from the Hunter archetype, with near-wild species of high utility such as reindeer being their only herds; they do not breed helpless, maladapted or superfluous vanity breeds of animals for fleecing sentimental rubes, nor are they prolific man-herders, at least not in modern times; typically one does not hear of a large urban or agricultural civilization being taken over by a Saami or a Chukchi banker elite, military Khaganate, or theocratic priest caste.


Mutations for nobility and non-material ethics might have occurred many times in hunter and herder populations. However they would have been quickly weeded out by the selective pressures of hunter and herder lifestyles, being generally useless or even maladapive to the survival and replication of those lifestyles. However in a farmer-archetype society which did not depend on constant nomadism and extraction to survive, this was no longer seen as dysgenic, and in fact was considered a boon.

Only when a new lifestyle of farming was first developed by some populations in the Neolithic, were conditions unusually favorable for such traits to thrive and form a new farmer archetype, which in time produced its own genetic populations and blood memory. This archetype is expressed in cultures that were generally 'earnest evolutionists' whose highest ideal was their own self-sufficient improvement towards nobility and apotheosis beyond the current extant state, rather than coercion or subduing of others for personal gain at the expense of leaving nobility neglected. Farmer archetype cultures and populations generally were unwilling to enslave or weaken others for their own benefit; they retained hunting and herding only at the bare minimum level needed for healthy protein consumption, and did not build major cults around them; rather, the noble religions were always of the Sun and the tilled soil; farmer-archetype magick was self-augmentative, not animistic or coercive – the Gods of farmer-archetype cultures are gods that wish to cultivate mankind to become like them, not herd them into slavery. Farmer'archetype cultures viewed man as improvable, and were generally not prone either to self-sabotage or other-sabotage, except under the influence of other archetypes.

Such a cultural archetype, requiring both a vast knowledge of crops and seasons, and compassion for nature to prevent depletion of soil, selected for both high IQ and high EQ, as well as lower ontogeny, slower maturation, dolichocephalic morphs, and a K-strategy geared at the fertility of quality before quantity. Likewise, farmer-archetype cultures preferred to improve those they conquered in battle whenever possible, rather than crush their will or degrade their traits into ignorant reactivity; they recognized that man could become godlike, instead of merely being a beast who hunted or herded other beasts and beast-men. It was a common saying among farmer-archetype cultures that “people who think a few seasons ahead plant good crops; people who think a hundred years ahead plant good people”. The hard labor of one's own hands in the sun and soil, was considered more valuable than an easy slaughter. Holy offerings were usually not animal sacrifices, but bread and ale, the fruits of physical cultivation, something farmer-archetype cultures deemed far more precious to the Gods. Ritual clothing generally used woven plant-based textiles, rather than animal parts. Farmer archetype magick was meditative, self-augmentative, and involved Rune-risting, Faring Forth (exteriorization of the higher soul or Fylgia), Galdr (chanted spells), and naturally produced shamanism (Spa, Seidhr) which was based on innate gifts and did not rely on drugs or toxins. The rituals were heavily connected with trees, plants, the Sun and the seasons, and were absent of dogma, but only followed traditions that were proven to be noble and effective in their Immanence.

The first true farmer-archetype culture – not merely a culture that practiced farming of crops, but also saw the earth, humanity, and spirituality in a farmer (rather than hunter or herder) context, was that of the primal Aryans (Ar-ya, meaning “Arising to perfection” or “cultivator”) or Indo-Europeans, who emerged roughly 13,000 years ago, either near the Caucasus/Black Sea region, or, some suggest, further north in an unusually fertile ice-free “hyperborean enclave” isolated amidst the still-remaining Ice Age glaciers of what is now northern Russia. Indian historian Bal Gangadhar Tilak referred to this proto-Aryan homeland as “the Arctic Home in the Vedas”, a land to which the oldest (pre-Brahmin) layers of the Vedas looked back with longing. Among western scholars, this land – wherever precisely it was – is today called the “Urheimat”, German for UR (“Origin”, as in the UR-Rune) + heim[at] (“homeland”). Starting about 10,000 years ago, the proto-Aryans migrated out across Asia and Europe, and the Avestan traditions hold that by about 7,000 years ago their eastern branch was already well established in a land known as Aryanam-Vaejah, now understood to be Greater Iran, or at least the part later known as the Bactrian kingdom. Further migrations into India, eastern Europe, and beyond continued for the next few thousand years. Celtic and Germanic peoples emerged from the Indo-Europeans and native Cro-Magnon paleolithic hunter tribes. Eventually through the migrations of small Indo-European populations such as the Shennongshi and the Arattai, farming reached such remote regions as China and Egypt, respectively, and was then spread even further by their descendants. The Wa people of Queen Himiko in pre-Imperial Japan, like the Shennongshi and the Tocharians, were also of Indo-European ancestry.

In all of these regions, the quality of life, cleanliness, diet, and cultural values for the native peoples subsequently improved under Indo-European leadership, and Indo-European peoples formed the nucleus of the ruling classes. They venerated the Sun, rather than the moon or the stars, for on earth, the Sun represents the source of all life, and likewise, their Gods were viewed as primarily Solar deities. Ingwi-Freyr, the Rising; Irmin-Wotan, the Zenith; Teiwaz-Tyr, the Setting. Arising, Being, and Passing away to new Arising. They also viewed the Gods as being like the Sun – self-sufficient, refining, generous, value-giving, and radiant, and – critically – also flawed and eventually mortal, though in time scales unfathomable to our eyes. Indo-European farmer cultures in particular also had the unique notion that the highest purpose of man was to become like the Gods – not to bring other humans down to a lower level to “feel” higher, nor to annihilate oneself into a larger “collective” unconscious, but rather to become like the Gods in one's own self (a concept that has often been stolen and corrupted by deceptive eclectic hucksters, but which is nonetheless very Indo-European).

Today there are no nationalities or ethnic groupings with purely Farmer-archetype blood memory; however certain parts of Europe and western Asia have the highest percentages of Indo-European populations and individuals of Farmer-archetype ancestry, though these are still a relative minority among the Hunter-archetype substrates of these regions. Farmer-archetype individuals who retain this ancestral cultural memory, are mostly interested in the ethical and spiritual improvement of those around them, regardless of whether it is popular or not, and usually not prone to any sort of sabotage.


Farmer archetype cultures and blood-memory were not always as diffuse as today; at the height of the Bronze Age they were indeed distinct nations and populations, or at least their (mostly) benevolent ruling classes. However, in the accompanying spread of farming technology to local Hunter-archetype populations across Eurasia (and with the soon-to-follow transformation of infertile land to fertile land via increasingly efficient methods of irrigation and nutrient composting), the naturally more R-strategic hunter populations rapidly multiplied in a scale unheard up before their adoption of farming, as carrying capacity and food supply rose. Lacking the same average IQ and EQ as the Indo-European peoples due to their different selective pressures, they did not well comprehend the spiritual ethics of farmer-archetype culture, nor its gods, known as Aesir, Ansiwiz, or Asuras (ascending powers) - but only its material improvements; thus they ended up farming extensively, but in more crude, destructive and disregardful ways, and did not cease to view their fellow humans in a strictly hunter paradigm (as either predator or prey). Those that intermarried with the Indo-European rulers generally acclimated better to Indo-European spirituality, but often did not have the same capacity for an Asa- and Arya-centric sacred experience, and were thus unable to dominate both the spiritual and temporal talents simultaneously, though their artistic and administrative skills were renowned. Thus, great kingdoms emerged in which farmer-archetype aristocracy found itself increasingly threatened by those they themselves had raised from sparse hunter to numerous agriculturalist; disaster was inevitable. While no individual is enslaved to an ancestral archtype, none are lacking for one.

In the late Bronze Age, burdened by these social and ethnic tensions as well as outside threats from invading herder cultures from the periphery, a number of Indo-European states collapsed, catastrophically. It is not a stretch to say that in this time, Teiwaz-Tyr (Tivash-Tir), the God of battle and sacrifice, became the primary patron of most Indo-European peoples in crisis. Noble priestly Heathen orders, the successors of Loddfafnir Dur-Savar, were decimated by rampaging hordes of greed. Massively outnumbered by the hunter races they had helped make prosperous, the Indo-Europeans were gradually faced with two choices; assimilate with the now urbanized Hunter-archetype cultures, or be exterminated. They made the only reasonable choice. Very soon, the Aryan bloodlines were absorbed into the Cro-magnons in Europe, the Zarzians in Iran, the Kurukshetra in northern India, and other smaller populations still further afield. Thus we ended up with the diverse Indo-European successor races and cultures of today. 

Subsequent forays of herder ideologies into the now-weakened and divided Indo-European lands resulted in massive numbers of people, both farmer and hunter archetype, coming under the thumb of herder and often anti-spiritual demagogue orders in gigantic theocratic empires, such as the Paulian Church, the Sunni Caliphate, and (less often talked about), the Brahmin (Turanid) caste system and its counterparts in the Mahayana (Turanid-co-opted) sects of Buddhism. As for Herder-archetype groups, they generally were already endogamous, and thus their genetic and blood-memory impact on most subject peoples has been negligible, though their coercive pastoral forms of religion – and the often genocidal means by which they enforced conformity to them through Hunter-archetype collaborators – have devastated the cognizancy of Indo-European regions with incalculable social and psychological damage for the past two millennia. The world rapidly declined into an age ruled by greed, betrayal, and hypocrisy – the Kali-Yuga or Iron Age, known to Germanic Rune-masters as the Eisenzeit. Spiritually, we are still living in it.

Now, because men of our contemporary age are caught up in the ascetic view of a life-denying religious system, but in spite of this cannot deny the primal laws of nature, a distorted morality had to be developed, which spreads hypocritical appearances over hidden actions. This has brought to a head all those outward forms of modern life, whose vacuousness and corruption are now beginning to disgust us.”

For practitioners of the Runes, the values and culture that will have the best spiritual effect in this ignorant age – that of Cognizancy towards the Odinic Immanence which is an improving force towards Asa-nature – are clear enough. A rediscovery of this suppressed ancestral heritage is needed; not just for those of Nordic descent, but ultimately for all peoples of substantial Indo-European heritage. For true Vitkar, Armanen, and Rune-masters, it is vital that not just the methods but their attendant ethics be learned. Thus, with all Runic meditation, Carving, Casting, and Stadhagaldr, the point must be made again and again that farmer-archetype ethics are at work here, and the goal is the improvement of people, not their indebtedness or dependency. The Runes, like the Gods, are powerful and independent energies which equalize gift and reward; insincere or half-hearted dedication to Runes, or trying to get something for nothing, is unlikely to result in progress. However, fully dedicated practice is likely to result in a complete transformation of cognizancy and reality for that person, and even in abilities approaching the strictly “mythical” (which we do not in any way dismiss as false), given that their cognizancy and blood-memory is already in line with the Runic/Odinic Immanence.

It is not that any of us wish this Immanence to be more powerfully felt by those with Farmer-archetype ancestry than those without; it is simply that the observable results of history, have made it so. Hunter-archetype masses largely refused to replicate Farmer-archetype evolutionary ideals and select for those same clustered traits, and also refused to curb their numbers, instead seeking on one hand to merely take advantage of the material benefits of farmer technology, and on the other hand to chase the illusory “free lunch” promises of an effortless afterlife dangled by herder religions; as a result, the precise mix of tendencies needed for a deep manifestation of Asa-Cognizancy and Odinic Immanence, tends to fall to those in the Indo-european successor populations with a large amount of farmer-archetype (rather than hunter) blood memory. This does not necessitate a particular skin tone, or ethnic label, but rather a large presence of Indo-European ancestral consciousness; in a sense, exclusionism is pointless because such consciousness is found among various peoples throughout the Indo-European migration regions, and before long you shall know them by their fruits; the LAF-principle, the school of lives, the tests and trials of our Wihinei, already separate out those who have sufficient Farmer-archetype cognizancy blood-memory from those who don't.

It is also important to remember that a lack of high amounts of such consciousness does NOT preclude a person from practicing a Heathen path or learning the basics of Rune-Magick; it simply means that they shall not in any way dictate the direction it is to take. A person of heavy Hunter-archetype consciousness, such as the mostly Cro-Magnon membership of many of the less sophisticated “Asatru” groups out there, is still capable of very effective applications of Runenmagie. However, the inherent inclination towards ethical application of it, may still require heavy guidance from those of a Farmer-archetype consciousness. Thus, in the Germanic Bronze Age, we see that Hunter archetype natives who were acculturated to farming by the Indo-Europeans, became (mostly) the farmer and warrior classes, the Ingvonen and Ostivanen, the devotees of Freyr and Tyr, respectively. Whereas the true “Odinists” of that time, were almost entirely of lines of heavy Indo-European extraction, and retained the very ancient Aryan label of Armanen (Arising-man, Sun-man, etc.) from which the Odinic titles of Irmin, Jormunr, and so forth derive, all of which mean “arising in might” or “powerful in noble magick”. The Heathenry of these farmer and warrior classes was like that of the priests, and yet different enough to serve their needs – thus Heathenry, Forn Sidr, Veh-Pishdad, etc. the old way, was not simply one “religion” as we understand it today, but a triple cluster of interconnected social and spiritual modes.

All three levels of Germanic (and other Indo-European dominated) societies in the Bronze age, were practicing different variants of the same religion; essentially then, you had different sorts of Gods for different alignments of consciousness – but all of them were still Gods of higher nobility, guiding the people to improvement towards a sort of godhood. It is not a union with a god, and thus the dissolution of self, but rather the development of one's own godhood by emulation – and thus, an apotheosis of self. This tendency in Indo-European religion was called Asha-Wih in Neolothic proto-Aryan, and Ansiwiz-Wihinei in the later proto-Germanic tongue – literally the “God-path” (the term Ásatrú is a modern invention). After a while it was simply known as Wihinei. While this goal of “becoming as Odin is” was generally understood on a subconscious level in the Farmer and Warrior classes – after all, these former hunter peoples already had some Indo-European admixture and a bit of the blood memory by the high Bronze age – its full understanding was generally a trait of the priest/mystic class, the Armanen. Thus the rituals of Armanen, and their subclasses and offshoots (Vitkar, Gothar, Vielkennar, etc.) were far more directed towards viewing the Gods and Goddesses as teachers and guides rather than something to be beseeched for aid, although that was not absent. The Farmer class now prayed for bountiful harvests; the Warrior class, for victory in battle; but it was the priests, the Armanen, who were able to actually guide them to those aims without negative consequences, through having a greater awareness of Cognizancy and the nature of the Gods and the Wyrd/Wurt/Vart.


In closing, Real Rune Magick ultimately has at its foundation, the values and ethics of the Indo-European, Solar, Farmer-archetype consciousness. It is informed by the worldview of the Odinic priests and Rune-masters, and Runes are central to its improvement of people. However, those with a more farmer or warrior understanding of Indo-European Heathenry can still benefit greatly from many of its applications, even if unable to master all of them. The important thing here, is to start off on the right foot, and make sure our cultural awareness and values are those of the Farmer archetype when tacking the complex questions of life and spirituality, rather than Hunder or Herder archetypes. The authentic Runic paths are not merely regurgitations of hunter or herder ideologies. They are not the nepotism of the Tanakh, nor are they the self-denial of the Evangelion – and they are also not the short-sighted and misguided fads of modern “Reconstructionist Heathenry” which spends all its time on pedantic and obsessive imitation of the past, throwing Frith out the window over minor disputes, without actually picking up and building on its lessons and best ethics – much as Hunter archetype cultures blindly did in the Paleolithic past. True Runic paths are also not the meaningless and aimless eclectic “all cultures are one” narrative that has been peddled by the hippies, wiccans, and fellow travelers of “Herderism-lite” in the post-Christian era, as a pretext to slowly obscure, dilute and obliterate whatever is left of genuine solar Indo-European spirituality under a colossal tide of market-dumped books, courses, and new age religions of repackaged Hunter (Voudou, Santeria, Wakan Tanka, etc.) and Herder (Kabbalah, Hermetica, Tengrism, Stregheria, etc.) syncretisms.

True Runic paths take the Immanence of Odin, and the natures of the Runes, and build the tradition upon that! They do not pretend to force Immanence to fit into the false traditions or overcompensating reactions of the modern world!

As a result, the Runic way will be very different from what most of us (even those with a deep-buried ancestral Immanence) have been socially programmed to believe today. It may be a shock, to practice the Runes in earnest using tried and tested Vitki methods and feel the results. This is normal; it is a process of stripping off the cynical and nihilistic baggage of the Eisenzeit, and returning to the Farmer archetype consciousness. But disbelief can only last so long for so many proofs of experience. Sooner than later, those destined to be Vitkar will indeed step fully into the Solar Odinic Immanence. Thus it is of Paramount Primacy, that the values of Farmer archetype culture, of nobility of action (Arya-kara or Arierkarr), of Solar growth, of improvement and cultivation rather than coercion and seizure, which have been briefly discussed and contrasted here, be promoted in all Runic rituals as a part of Cognizancy of the Odinic Immanence.

The cultural legacy of the Indo-Europeans is intrinsic to Rune Magick and its successful operation. While religion and rituals, and even magickal practices existed among Hunter and Herder archetype cultures, both types used it solely to derive worldly benefits (even when using shamanic trances) before they came into contact with the ancient Indo-European solar cultures in the Neolithic. Only the arrival of Farmer archetype thinking changed the focus of religion to a pursuit of higher ideals. This is reflected in many prehistoric customs of the proto-Aryan lineages even before formalization into religious systems such as Armanenschaft or Forn Sidr, alongside a general tendency towards elegant simplicity and austere forms in ritual and adornment – even when of a royal or arch-priestly nature - rather than gratuitous complexity and opulence for its own sake. One thus sees the fruits of a sound and well-ordered Rune Magick practice in the compassion of its practitioners for one another; one can also see the opposite in the many fractured and weak-ego "kindreds" who dilute their practice.

Instead of attempting to embalm or preserve their dead at all costs, our Indo-European ancestors often burned their greatest warriors on pyres and scattered the ashes to the wind (to be borne up to Asgard or wherever their Garma took them, upon the very breath of Odin/Wotan/Vayu-Vata). When there were burials, they were generally simple with only a few weapons or tools buried; there was not a paranoia over how much finery a person needed for the afterlife. Instead of only turning to goddesses of fertility, as Hunter cultures had done, they also turned to goddesses of wisdom such as Frigg and Skadi, and honored wisdom and calm judgment (both male and female) as not just a prerequisite for a good marriage but also an admirable quality in its own right – one that is sorely lacking in today's herded and divided mainstream world. Instead of viewing humanity as distinct from and superior to the rest of the living world, Indo-European peoples saw fundamental worth and value in all creatures under the Sun, a sentiment implicit in their heavy use of solar symbols like the Fylfot, and developed a great respect for cows and horses as our longtime plowing and farming companions.

It is notable that the roots of Indo-European Farmer archetype culture have often been misinterpreted by Hunter and Herder cultures as “unwholesome” in order to create fake controversies and justify the subjugation and destruction of said Farmer culture. Preference for cremation and pyres was frequently condemned by Herder cultures and faiths as a desire to desecrate the dead (even though Herder cultures themselves burned their animal sacrifices with gusto, yet forbid the burning of their own corpses). Memorial Rune-stones and the occasional solar-aligned burial were also condemned as “evil blasphemy” by herder cultures. The practice of Volvas and wise women teaching their arts to their daughters, or Vitkar teaching the Runes and seasonal rites to their sons, was accused by herders of being a sexual perversion. Respect for cattle has long been derided as superstitious (and in some cases, even forced by Herder elites like the Brahmins to become so, as a means of social control), and concern for the ethical treatment of animals has often been viewed by both Hunter and Herder cultures as oversensitive or "un-manly". And to this day, the Fylfot or Swastika, as sacred in Runic traditions as anywhere else, is still believed by ignorant 'useful idiots' to be a symbol of racism.

In all later historical civilizations after the start of the Eisenzeit, there have been rare individuals of exceptional vision and Cognizancy. These were people who had both a strong grasp of a noble Immanence and also despised the ignorance of the largely Hunter or Herder-dominated societies into which they had been born. Nor do we see the prospect of the modern world's reactive and mindless “mass-cultures” improving over time, but are convinced that they were ignoble from the outset, and that the further they 'advance' along this regressive path, the worse they will become. Such individuals as realize this, often turn romantically towards the distant past, before the Eisenzeit, convinced the only real way forward for mankind is to reject the “bad or worse” false dichotomies of ideology that have been pre-programmed to keep us spiritually dead and dumb, and re-learn and re-activate the Immanence that was so cruelly stripped from us by the capricious machinations of Herder culture, and the myopic avarice of Hunter culture which fell for its every ruse. For Rune-Magick too, the only way forward is to abandon the mainstream orthodoxy foisted upon it by ill-intentioned outsiders, whether academic or eclectic, and returning to the beginning of the UR-roots of Runic Immanence – to return to a different, more noble path, both natural and supernatural.

All pure humans who are striving to get ahead are now starting from materiality or spirituality and having to unify the two. As long as there is dissipation [between them] as it is up to now, nothing great can happen in the meaning of a valuable leadership towards mutual recognition of humans with one another. Therefore it will be a difficult task, because every party believes itself to know everything already, and to be exclusively correct. We do not deny the dense material world, but we cannot deny the world of subtle matter and its facts either. Only by this way can we find the best of both worlds.”

Such individuals, who may differ in the precise ethnicity, color, language, and other aspects of background, and who may or may not display all of the physical attributes mentioned above, are yet bound together by a common Indo-European blood memory – the best part of our ancestries. It is our desire that they not forget that primal Solar legacy which the Ur-Aryan ancestors bequeathed to them, and cherished and protected through thousands of years of struggles and sacrifices, though even the closest of kin being turned against them by the machinations of the envious and the cowardly. The rare individuals today who feel in their very bones that burning desire to re-connect with the Solar consciousness of their ancestral past, regardless of how taboo the kings of the current age try to paint it, are our brothers and sisters in spirit as well as in heart as well as to some rare and precious extent in blood; and in oath, are those those individuals from other archetypes who defy them. We ask these individuals from all over the world to take this chance to reunite and realize our shared vision, as heirs of the Armanen and Vitkar of old. Tradition versus Immanence

If you have been following this blog for a while you may have come across the occasional mention of the terms "Immanence" and "Tradition" in comparison and contrast with each other. This is something that is not often talked about among Runic circles, but is in fact vitally important to understanding and practicing the Runes effectively, in the spirit of the sacred culture which arose from them.

At the core of Indo-European cultures is an Immanence - a transcendent, pulsing, living current of god-nature, of Asa-nature. This stretches back as a sort of metaphysical ancestral memory all the way back to the Neolithic, if not further (it is mentioned in mystical texts of many Indo-European traditions that their ancestral homeland was an icy land to the North, so that Ice Age Europe or Siberia may indeed be a starting point of IE civilization; even an Indian nationalist like Bal Tilak argued as much, based on a chronological understanding of the Vedas).

This Heathen land used to be icy. Now it's lush and green; good roots and good branches.

So what is Immanence, and why does it take such primacy in Germanic (and indeed, in the core of all Indo-European) spiritual paths?

To better understand what Immanence is, it is best to start with something people can typically understand more concretely: Tradition.

Authentic Germanic Heathenry, for example, is "Traditionalist" as opposed to "modernist". That much is clear; there are strong natural laws at play in Heathenry, a powerful synergy or polarities, the importance of quality in folk, and of course the Rita or Natural Law - the manifestations in Midgard of the core principle of Orlog, Ur-Lag, or "Original Law" of causes and consequences, of Garma and Wyrd. It is a tradition based on the nobility of nature's best aspects, and is not beholden to any modern social engineering fad or political bandwagon. It is as raw and powerful and unapologetically strong-willed as nature, and refuses to submit to the slave morality of either church, commissar, or "correctness officer". Most of all, it is a refining force, not a self-destructive one. Entitled infighting and the erosion of effective social norms at the altar of wayward "modernity" with no clearly defined end-goal, is never glorified as "cool", for it is the sacred culture of the folk that enables the individual to fulfill his or her true purpose of Asa-approaching nobility, and be aught more than a blight upon the planet.

Authentic Heathenry:
When the Immanence is noble, so is the tradition that grows from it.

However, this does not mean that true Heathenry, or any other Indo-European path or cluster of paths, is enslaved to a particular tradition or rite of practice from a particular era. In a sense, we must understand Indo-European paths as having traditions, but not being built on traditions. For a tradition is not the foundation of a house, but rather, its walls, roof and crossbeams. Traditions can evolve, can rise and fall, can crumble or be saved from crumbling if the foundation is strong - but they cannot be the foundation itself, or the religion/path has no deeper spiritual value to speak of. Tradition for tradition's sake, is no spirituality at all - merely blind repetition. Only if the Immanence is noble, the Armanen and Gothar of old taught, is the Tradition worth preserving or modifying. Obscure the Immanence, and Tradition becomes a boat with no wind in its sails - Njordr without Odin, Freyr without Tyr, Freyja without Frigg... cycles without full consciousness. Odin taught Loddfafnir:

I know the seventh [Rune]:
if I see on high, blazing,
a hall over the bench-companions;
Burn it never so brightly,
yet I can still save it -
I know how to sing that song.

It can still be saved, that great hall of a folk-way, if the companions within are true and noble of heart and consciousness; should their Immanence be of a Runic quality, of one Odin deems worthy to be saved for a later and greater purpose in Midgard, that they might earn a higher place in the Halls of the Gods, he will save it. But this should not be assumed as given for a lesser or weaker Immanence or a less worthy group of bench-companions. Thus Immanence is more vital than even Tradition.


The practices of a particular people at a particular place and time; in the more general sense, any culture dependent on exact transmission of such practices - word-for-word from generation to generation - to maintain itself; culture dependent on rote repetition and sanctification of rigidly copying the past, as opposed to sanctification of the Immanence behind the rituals.

Culture which radiates spontaneously from within; innate and subconscious culture not dependent on either contemporary abstraction or blind formalism, but from instinct imparted by the Gods and blood memory; for our purposes, Immanence refers to an Indo-European Immanence.

Ancient Germanic term for the “religion”, “Wisdom” or “the Way” of the ancient Heathens, in both the exoteric and esoteric sense, but usually referring to its exoteric level as practiced in ancient times; the synergy of Immanence and Tradition in their proper places of nobility; with Immanence having primacy and supremacy over Tradition. The first syllable of the word Wihinei, is the word wih- which reflects the Proto-Germanic *wih- “sacred”; it is the root of the Old Norse Vé which means "sacred space" as well as being the name of the God of Rituals and send-offs - the third and final manifestation of the Odinic Triad. *Wih or vyeh also means “sacred path” or “path” in eastern Aryan languages, reflecting a primal Indo-European origin.

In his seminal masterpiece, Das Geheimnis der Runen, Meister Guido von List himself defines the term as “the inward sanctification.” Thus the inner core, the Immanence, is the real root of the traditions which form the outer husk of the Wihinei.  

Thus the Wihinei, the ancient primal Runic religion - solar and agricultural - was crafted from a Root of Immanence, which sprouts and regenerates Branches of Tradition, periodically replacing the old with newer ones, but always having the same cultural and spiritual core behind the nature of the branches. so that no branch ever spites the roots! From a Holy Immanence sprout Holy Traditions, whereas from a corrupt root sprout only corrupt, ignoble, irrational, degenerative, deformed and mutilated branches.

From Wihinei sprouted eventually the branches we know as Irminenschaft, Forn Siðr, Fyrnsidu, Theodisc Geléafa, Urglaawe, and eventually Ásatrú (well, its native Icelandic form in any case). The trunk, in reality, was the esoteric core tradition of Runic solar priest-kings closer to the Immanence's wellspring than any other order of Heathenry, known as Armanenschaft in the Continent, and as Jormunskáp or Skaldskáp in the somewhat rarified Scandinavian offshoot.

It must be emphasized that The Immanence is the root, the Traditions are branches - not the other way around. Even if Viking-age religion was largely persecuted to death, that does not make the Immanence dead. Even though Vata-ism or Asura-ism was largely stamped out in Greater Iran, Armenia, and northern India, that does not make the Immanence dead. Even though desert religions destroyed many sites and killed many Solar priests and Heathen mystics across Eurasia, prevented the procedures of many rituals and traditions from being written down, and killed off those who orally transmitted them, that did not kill off the Immanence entirely. The Immanence still lives in the ancestral memory of Indo-European peoples - more strongly in some individuals of a given bloodline than others. From those few with a true complete Cognizancy of their ancestral Immanence, new but still culturally grounded traditions can emerge.

Thus, the authentic Runic paths are NOT based in Tradition, but in Immanence. They are not based on dogmatic commandments, or inexplicably over-complicated tradition handed down blindly without any underlying relevance to the souls of Indo-European peoples. Rather, tradition in Armanism, Odinism, and all Runic paths, followed the original Indo-European principle of Immanence before Tradition - where Tradition was the vehicle for the transmission of Immanence to the less gifted, but it was merely the husk or outgrowth of Immanence for the more gifted.

Thus we are not slaves to traditions from a specific time and place within the Runic continuum - and while Esoteric Runers are not, and have never been wayward postmodern fad-chasers, we are also not pedantic and unquestioning blind repeaters of every tiny bit of exact clothing, technology, and word-for-word ritual of the Viking Age, or the Anglo-Saxon golden age, or the Migration Period, or The Nordic Bronze Age, or any other age in the long and intricate history of the Heathen peoples. Our Runic (as well as our non-Runic) rituals honor the past, yet we do not obsess over making them identical to those in any one specific period in Heathen history; they evolved in each age to suit the needs of the time, with the aim always being the primacy of Immanence and becoming like the Gods. We don't "play Viking" any more than actual Vikings would have "played Bronze-age". We are not slaves to form.

For we accept the eternal truth that the only constant is change, and yet change for its own sake is not a change worth taking, rather, change must have a basis in noble culture and Wihinei - lest it be corrupted, and destroy the very culture and people it claimed to help. We have seen many such destructive and ill-guided changes in modern times; many manufactured "isms" of the debt-monger, the soft-handed street agitator, and the professional litigator rewriting the laws capriciously to benefit himself, to the grief of millions of beleaguered landsvolk of various tongues and shades in all Indo-European lands. There is no point in delving into the muck of all their machinations here.

Change for its own sake is rootless and rudderless, just as Tradition for its own sake is aimless and pointless. Thus our way is Immanence at its core, and thus the Traditions that sprout from it are both elegant and meaningful. There is no excessive tradition, no slave pen of paranoid obsessive over-complication, no quicksand of fear, guilt, and neurotic arrogance against the less-than-perfect practitioner who is still learning. In Armanenschaft, as well as other authentic Runic paths, Tradition serves Immanence and thus serves us in our efforts to become more like the Gods - not the other way around!

The ancient Traditions that we DO retain, are not there for their own sake, but simply because they are what has been proven to work for strengthening our connection with our Immanence! 

They are the ones that the Runic Skalds and Armanen of past ages tested over centuries to be the most effective and proven methods for accessing the ancestrally transmitted Immanence of Odin/Wotan/Vayu-Vata and the Runes/Raunen/Ravanan in our daily lives. Our traditions are there because our sages and wise ones proved that they work, not because somebody imposed them on us to create more work for us. Our traditions are there for our improvement, not for fanaticism or enslavement to routine through obsessive legalism and pedantic hair-splitting sophistry.

To put it bluntly - the Runic paths are not the Tanakh, and they are also not the draconian Turanid traditions of the Brahmins of the Kali-Yuga, post-1500 BCE.
